Aba power Resumes intensive 1 year campaign for meter upgrade

Aba Power Ltd, a new electricity distribution company in Nigeria, has launched a one-year campaign to help customers upgrade their prepaid meters. The purpose is to allow customers to use their current meters and make payments beyond November next year.

By November 24, 2024, all meters worldwide will become outdated if owners do not switch to a new system. This is known as Token Identifier (TID) Rollover, which poses a challenge to meter functionality. Cliff Eneh, an energy consultant and former senior manager at the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), explains that TID represents the time elapsed since 1993 and prevents the reuse of meter tokens. Therefore, starting from November 24, 2024, each new token will reset the TID to zero, resulting in TID Rollover.

In a letter to Aba Power customers, Managing Director Patrick Umeh stressed the importance of starting the public awareness campaign a year in advance. The company aims to ensure that all its customers are well-informed and prepared for the obsolescence of their meters next year.

The extensive campaign will begin on November 15, 2023, allowing customers to avoid any last-minute rush or associated issues. Umeh, who previously worked at the Los Angeles Water and Power Corporation and later served as a Commissioner at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), stated that every prepaid meter needs to undergo a key change and memory reset before November 24, 2024.

Customers in Aba will not be charged for these changes. Aba Power has created a dedicated website, abapower.com/tid-tokens, to assist customers with self-service upgrades. However, those who require assistance can visit any Aba Power office or request staff support in transitioning to the new TID.

Umeh also advised customers to load all purchased tokens before upgrading their meters to ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted access to electricity.

Meanwhile, the Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (ALPADA), consisting of 200,000 members, commended Aba Power for initiating the early awareness campaign on meter upgrades. ALPADA President General, Chief Alphonsus Udeigbo, expressed gratitude for the proactive approach and stated that one year is enough time for residents and businesses serviced by Aba Power Ltd in the Aba Metropolis and surrounding areas to switch to the new system.

Chief Udeigbo pledged the association’s support in encouraging landlords, tenants, and businesses to immediately begin migrating to the new system. This collaborative effort ensures a smooth and efficient transition for all stakeholders.

conclusively, Aba Power’s one-year campaign to assist customers in upgrading their prepaid meters reflects their commitment to ensuring a seamless transition to the new system. Through early awareness and various support channels, Aba Power aims to minimize inconvenience and guarantee continuous access to electricity beyond November 2024.
