Electricity Consumers in the Southeast Express Disapproval of Obstacles Faced by Geometric Power Plant
The Southeast Zonal Chapter of the Electricity Consumers of Nigeria (ECAN) has voiced its disappointment with what it referred to as adversaries of the region who are impeding the commencement of operations of the Geometric Power plant in the Osisioma Industrial Estate in Aba. This plant is set to facilitate quality and uninterrupted electricity supply to nine out of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, which are serviced by the Aba Power, Nigeria’s latest distribution company.
In a statement released today in Enugu, Engineer Joseph Ubani, Chairman of ECAN Southeast, and Comrade Chris Okpara, the secretary, criticized the immediate opposition that surfaced following media reports on the imminent commissioning of the Geometric Power, the largest investment in the Southeast. The association accused these forces of utilizing unfamiliar individuals to disseminate negative information about the utility on social media, where claims and allegations are not rigorously scrutinized.
ECAN emphasized that once the Geometric Power plant becomes operational, Aba and its environs will benefit from reliable and consistent electricity supply, surpassing that of any other city in Nigeria. It pointed out that during the transition phase to continuous electricity, the integrated power group would import power from generation firms such as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company of Nigeria (NDPHCN), given the constraints faced by generation companies due to a shortage of natural gas and the fragility of the aging transmission network.
The association questioned the motives behind the attempts to create an impression that electricity supply in the country is satisfactory except in the Aba area, noting that the situation in Aba is actually better than in most parts of the country despite the limited power supply from NDPHCN.
Describing Geometric Power as the most substantial investment in the Southeast, valued at almost $800 million, ECAN reaffirmed its confidence in the commissioning of the electricity utility, asserting that Geometric Power has implemented top-tier electricity infrastructure to transform the socioeconomic landscape of Aba, in spite of the efforts of misanthropist and dissenters.
