Commissioning of the Aba integrated power project in osisioma Aba, Abia state

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today marks a momentous occasion as we gather for the commissioning of the Aba Integrated Power Project, a venture that holds great significance for the energy landscape in Nigeria. This project, which encompasses the Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL) and APL Electric Company Ltd (APLE), represents a critical milestone in the nation’s pursuit of sustainable and reliable electricity supply.

The Aba Integrated Power Project, initiated in 2004, is an integrated power generation and distribution initiative sanctioned by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission for the Aba Ring Fenced Area, covering nine of the seventeen Local Government Areas in Abia State. With a capacity of 188MW, the power plant has 141MW fully operational and ready for commissioning. It is important to emphasize that any surplus electricity not utilized within Aba will be seamlessly integrated into the national grid, contributing towards enhancing power supply across various regions of Nigeria.

I would like to underscore that the significance of this project extends beyond the confines of Abia State or even Aba itself; it is a venture that serves the interests of all Nigerians. Its impact will reverberate throughout the nation, enhancing the overall electricity grid and benefiting citizens across the country.

The expeditious commissioning of the Aba IPP reflects the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu Administration to elevate the nation’s electricity sector. We acknowledge the valuable contributions of Professor Bart Nnaji, the founder and chairman of Geometric Power, whose expertise and dedication have been instrumental in advancing this project. Furthermore, the cooperation between APLE and relevant agencies under the Ministry of Power exemplifies the collaborative efforts to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.

It is lamentable that the ambitious potential of the Aba IPP was hindered for nearly nine years due to challenges stemming from the privatization process of the power sector. However, under the present administration, we are resolutely focused on the future, committed to fostering an enabling environment for robust and sustainable power projects. The President Bola Tinubu Administration remains dedicated to providing support and facilitating the growth of initiatives such as the Aba IPP, underscoring our determination to fortify the nation’s energy infrastructure.

As we celebrate the realization of this significant power project, I implore all Nigerians to recognize the value of safeguarding our critical infrastructure. The preservation and maintenance of such infrastructure are paramount, and every citizen must play a role in reporting any vandalism or illegal activities that threaten these vital assets. Additionally, I urge all Nigerians to fulfill their obligations by paying their electricity bills promptly, refraining from unauthorized connections, and supporting legitimate efforts by electricity distribution companies. By doing so, we collectively contribute to the sustainability and success of the power sector.

In closing, I wish to affirm that the Federal Government will closely monitor the performance of the Aba IPP, viewing it as a potential model for transformative reform in the Nigerian power sector. We are optimistic about the positive impact of this project and remain dedicated to advancing the nation’s energy landscape.

Thank you for your attention.
