U.S. Embassy Announces New Visa Interview Rules for Nigerians

Starting April 22, 2025, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria requires all visa applicants in Abuja and Lagos to present a DS-160 form with a barcode starting with “AA00” that matches their online appointment. The rule, announced Friday, aims to reduce errors in the visa process. Applicants with mismatched barcodes will be denied entry to the consular section and lose their interview slot.

The change targets Nigeria’s high visa demand, where wait times average 307 days in Abuja and 409 days in Lagos. Applicants must verify their DS-160 barcode two weeks before their interview. If incorrect, they need to submit a support ticket on the Applicant Visa Information and Tracking System (AVITS) 10 days prior to correct it. Reusing old DS-160 forms is not allowed.

This follows other updates, like the January 2025 rule requiring immigrant visa applicants to visit the Lagos Consulate twice. Many Nigerians worry about navigating the new barcode system, especially with limited internet access. Travel agents note the risk of errors but see potential for smoother processing if followed correctly. Social media on X shows applicants urging others to check their details early.

Consular officials advise using www.usvisaappt.com for support and stress early preparation to avoid delays. The Mission says these steps will improve efficiency and fairness in visa processing. Nigerians are encouraged to comply to prevent disruptions as the deadline nears.
