BREAKING: Nigeria Immigration Service Hikes Passport Fees to N100,000 and N200,000

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has doubled passport fees effective September 1, 2025, raising the cost of a 32-page passport to N100,000 and a 64-page version to N200,000 for applications within Nigeria. Diaspora fees remain unchanged at $150 and $230, respectively.

The NIS cites rising production costs and the need for enhanced security features as reasons for the hike, promising improved quality and faster processing. However, the increase—from N50,000 and N100,000 set in 2024—has sparked outrage amid Nigeria’s economic challenges, with inflation above 30% and a minimum wage of N70,000.

Critics argue the fees make travel unaffordable for many, potentially fueling illegal migration. “This is a blow to ordinary Nigerians,” said Lagos resident Chika Okoro. Social media, particularly X, has seen trending hashtags like #PassportFeeHike.

The NIS defends the move, emphasizing compliance with global standards and urging use of the official portal to avoid scams. With the deadline looming, immigration offices expect a rush of applications.
