Benue Pastor Remanded in Custody Over Shocking Alleged Rape of Church Member During Counselling Session

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local Christian community, a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of 34-year-old Pastor Kelvin Imo at the Makurdi Correctional Centre. Imo, a clergyman at a Living Faith Church branch opposite Coca-Cola Camp along Km 5 Gboko Road, faces charges of rape after allegedly assaulting a female church member during what was supposed to be a private prayer and counselling session. The incident, which reportedly occurred on April 22, underscores growing concerns over the vulnerability of congregants seeking spiritual guidance.
According to the prosecution’s account, the victim, whose identity remains protected for privacy reasons, visited the church seeking pastoral support from Imo, her trusted spiritual leader. During the session, the pastor is alleged to have prayed over her and then wiped her face with a handkerchief, after which she suddenly felt weakened and unable to resist. The complainant detailed in her petition to police that Imo overpowered her in this state, forcefully engaging in sexual intercourse without her consent right inside the church premises. The matter came to light when the victim lodged a formal complaint with authorities, highlighting the pastor’s abuse of authority in a space meant for solace and healing.
The case was first reported to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Makurdi on September 2 through the victim’s petition, prompting a swift police investigation that led to Imo’s arrest. Prosecutor Inspector Friday Kanshio informed the court that the alleged offence violates Section 284 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue State, 2004, which carries severe penalties for such violations. Imo, residing at No. 5 Gboko Road in Makurdi, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment but was denied bail as the magistrate deemed the gravity of the charges warranted further detention pending thorough inquiry.
The court’s decision to adjourn the matter until October 8 for further mention has left the Benue community reeling, with calls from women’s rights groups for stricter oversight of religious leaders. Local advocates emphasize the need for safe spaces in places of worship, while the Living Faith Church has yet to issue an official statement on the scandal. As investigations continue, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the power imbalances that can turn moments of vulnerability into nightmares.
