Governor Otti Launches EU-Funded Social Protection Project in Abia
Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State
Umuahia, Abia State – Governor Dr. Alex Otti launched the €13 million “Support for Sustainable and Innovative Social Protection Systems in Nigeria” on September 25, 2025, at the Government House in Umuahia. Funded by the EU with UNICEF and ILO support, the project targets vulnerable groups like children and the poor. Otti also inaugurated the Abia State Social Protection Council, led by Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, to align the initiative with the “New Abia” vision.
The 36-month project, with Abia as a pilot state, will enhance the state’s social register to identify and support needy households through health, education, and economic programs. Otti called it a commitment to “restore the dignity of the human person,” building on Abia’s recent reforms, including the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.
EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot praised the project’s potential to strengthen Nigeria’s social safety nets. UNICEF’s Judith Leveillee called it a “springboard” for the vulnerable, while ILO’s Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo noted its alignment with poverty alleviation goals. State commissioners and civil society representatives attended, showing strong support.
The initiative builds on the EU’s prior contributions in Abia, impacting thousands in health and education. It aims to foster sustainable change, with the new council ensuring accountability. Abia’s efforts could set a model for social protection across Nigeria over the next three years.
