Enugu To Face 10-Day Power Outage for Substation Upgrade

Residents and businesses in Enugu metropolis are preparing for a 10-day planned power outage from October 22, 2025, to October 31, 2025, as announced by MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC). The daily interruptions, set to occur between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., will enable the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to carry out major rehabilitation and reinforcement at its New Haven substation, aimed at boosting long-term power reliability across the region.

The outage will target specific 33KV feeders on designated days: Kingsway Line 1 on October 22, Emene Industrial Line 1 on October 23, Thinkers Corner Line on October 24, Trans Ekulu Line on October 25, Kingsway Line 2 and 9th Mile Line on October 26, Emene Industrial Line 2 on October 28, Ugwuogo Line on October 29, and Ituku Ozalla Line on October 31. Affected areas include Emene Industrial Layout, Abakpa Nike, Trans-Ekulu, Nowas, Ugbodogwu, Thinkers Corner, Ugbo Nnebedum, Nkpologwu, 9th Mile, Shoprite, Golf Estate, Zoo Estate, Okpara Avenue, Kingsway Road, Abakaliki Road, CBN Quarters, Railway Quarters, Artisan, Ngwo, Coal Camp, Ologo Quarters, Uwani, Asata, Golden Royale, Iva Valley, Centenary City, Ugwuaji, Amechi, Obeagu, and surrounding neighborhoods.

MEDL’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, apologized for the inconvenience and urged customers to plan accordingly, stressing that the upgrades are critical for improved electricity supply. This scheduled outage follows a similar one-day maintenance interruption on October 1, 2025, reflecting ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s broader power challenges, with Enugu Disco allocated approximately 334 MW as of early October.

Local businesses and residents are already making arrangements, with some expressing frustration over the timing but acknowledging the need for infrastructure improvements. EEDC has assured customers that the works will lead to a more stable power supply, encouraging patience during this period of disruption.
