Tinubu Sacks Top Military Chiefs in Major Security Shake-Up

President Bola Tinubu has sacked several top military chiefs in a sweeping reshuffle announced on October 24, 2025, aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s security apparatus. The changes, effective immediately, replace the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Defence Staff, as confirmed by Sunday Dare, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication. The move comes as Nigeria grapples with persistent threats from Islamist insurgencies, banditry, and separatist movements, with the President urging the new appointees to prioritize professionalism and unity.

The most significant change sees General Christopher Musa replaced as Chief of Defence Staff by General Olufemi Oluyede, a veteran officer. Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has been succeeded by Lt. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar as Chief of Army Staff, while Vice Admiral Saidu Abbas takes over from Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as Chief of Naval Staff. Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar is replaced by Air Marshal Nnamdi Ananwko as Chief of Air Staff. Notably, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun remains in his role despite public pressure for his removal, indicating Tinubu’s focus on restructuring the military leadership.

The shake-up follows reports of a thwarted coup attempt earlier this week, fueling speculation of internal military tensions. Tinubu expressed appreciation for the outgoing chiefs’ service, emphasizing the need for enhanced coordination to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted threats. The reshuffle is seen as a critical step in repositioning the armed forces to restore public confidence.

Analysts view this as part of Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s security sector since assuming office in May 2023. The new military leaders face mounting pressure to deliver results amid rising violence and economic difficulties. While further details on additional promotions or retirements remain undisclosed, the administration has signaled that these appointments are pivotal to improving operational efficiency and strengthening Nigeria’s response to its complex security landscape.
