NLC Condemns Heavy Taxation by Tinubu’s Government

Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the new tax reforms implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as regressive and burdensome on low-income workers. NLC President Joe Ajaero voiced these concerns on January 7, 2026, during the 85th birthday celebration and memoir launch for former NLC President Hassan Sunmonu in Abuja.

Ajaero criticised the tax laws for being drafted without input from organised labour and the masses, who he said are the primary taxpayers. He argued that the reforms impose heavier taxes on those already struggling with economic hardship, including workers earning the national minimum wage, and cannot be considered fair or progressive.

The NLC leader highlighted the dangerous combination of heavy taxation, persistently low wages, and rising national debt, warning that these factors pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s economic and democratic stability. He questioned the transparency of borrowed funds and urged the government to rethink the policies and re-engage with labour.

Ajaero also reiterated calls for an urgent review of workers’ wages ahead of statutory negotiations, emphasising the need for a living wage amid inflation. The congress pledged to continue organising and mobilising to hold the government accountable on pro-people policies.
