#FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Ohanaeze Ndigbo Declares “Operation Occupy Abuja”
Abuja, Nigeria

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has extended the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protests nationwide until October 25, 2025, under “Operation Occupy Abuja,” vowing to sustain pressure on the Federal Government to release detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu amid reports of police brutality during today’s demonstrations.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, through its youth wing Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), announced the five-day escalation after security forces fired live bullets and tear gas at peaceful protesters in Abuja’s Maitama district. OYC President Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaeze condemned the crackdown as a “grievous injustice,” stating: “Any attempt to maim or kill protesters will face fierce resistance from Ndigbo worldwide.”
Protests began at 7:00 AM near Transcorp Hilton Hotel, led by activist Omoyele Sowore. Chants for Kanu’s release per court orders turned chaotic as police and military scattered crowds, arresting 13 including Kanu’s lawyer Ifeanyi Ejimakor. No deaths occurred, but bystanders suffered from gas exposure and stampedes.
In the Southeast, sit-at-home actions shut markets and schools peacefully. Ohanaeze plans daily marches converging on Aso Rock and the National Assembly, urging global Igbo support. “We will not back down until justice is served,” Okpalaeze declared. The extension has drawn applause from NGOs like Take It Back Movement and NANS, who joined condemnations of police excess. Human rights groups demand probes, warning of escalating tensions if Kanu remains detained despite court rulings.
