The release of the former central bank governor Emefiele (CBN)

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been released from Kuje Prison after fulfilling his bail conditions, according to sources. The release was reportedly executed in secret at 3 pm today, with prison officials cooperating to hide Emefiele from visitors. The source claims that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is still pursuing him for arrest, which is why the release was kept covert. It remains unclear who facilitated his release, as Emefiele’s lawyer, Maxwell Opara, declined to comment until speaking with his brother. Emefiele was granted bail by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court on November 8, following his re-arraignment on charges related to procurement fraud on November 18. He is accused of enriching himself through the fraudulent award of a contract for the procurement of vehicles during his tenure as CBN governor. The charges include alleged purchases of Toyota Hilux vehicles, a Toyota Avalon, a Toyota Landcruiser V8, and two Toyota Hilux Shell Specifications. Emefiele had difficulty meeting the bail conditions due to concerns that the government may target his surety. A final panel report submitted to President Bola Tinubu by special investigator Jim Obazee alleges that Emefiele used Ways and Means advances by the CBN for personal enrichment. No response was received from Abubakar Umar, the spokesperson for Kuje Prison, regarding inquiries made.
