Afugiri ready to welcome visitors for her 2024 ekpe masquerade festival as measures have been put in place for peaceful cultural celebration

Afugiri which is made up of 11 autonomous communities in Ohuhu Umuahia North Local Government of Abia State, has imposed a ban on the use of cutlasses and other dangerous weapons during the celebration of the ekpe masquerade festival in all 11 autonomous communities that make up Afugiri. The ekpe committee has directed the Vigilante Group and the security socio-cultural group in the communities to apprehend any defaulter of the directive and hand them over to the police for prosecution. In addition to arrest, such defaulters will face fines.

The committee emphasized that no cutlass or other dangerous weapons should be brandished or used during the festival. It advised all indigenes and their guests to maintain a peaceful, loving, and law-abiding demeanor and to avoid violence that could threaten the peace of Afugiri land during the festival.

In response to the directive, community leaders and individuals from around the world who enjoy the festival commended the decision, stating that it is a positive step to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the ekpe masquerade festival and engaging in clashes and criminal activities. They also expressed happiness at the arrival of the committee chairman, Zibba Nnununkeigwe Okotoko, and welcomed him back to Nigeria, particularly to Ohuhu and Afugiri for the masquerade festival of the year 2024. They extended blessings for a successful and prosperous year ahead.
